Culture & Literature
Below are examples of assignments completed during various culture and literature classes taken at Clemson University between 2012 and 2016.
In Japanese 4170, Japanese Culture and Society, we were asked to write a final paper based on a topic chosen from those that were covered over the course of the semester. This paper discussed Onmyōdō (The Way of Yin and Yang), a system of occult divination based on Taoist theory of the five elements. It explores the practice's arrival in Japan alongside Buddhism and the influence it has had over the Japanese way of life.
In English 385, Children's Literature, we completed 3 different Lit Crit assignments. For each of these, we were assigned one of the texts covered in class and had to find a scholarly article focused either on the book itself, or one of the it's prevalent themes. For this first Lit Crit, I discussed Jumanji and the author's recurring message that children's dreams can actually be reality.
This is the second of the Lit Crit assignments completed for English 3850, Children's Literature. It discusses the challenges of translating each volume of the worldwide bestselling series, Harry Potter. Focusing on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and the Japanese translation of the book. I looked specifically at the challenge posed by Hagrid's lack of defined hierarchy placement.
